Hurumanu 1

 How To Be Normal

For Hurumanu 1 / Outstanders, we have been looking at our article for our level. I’m in group 3 the highest group working on an article called ‘How To Be Normal’

We had to answer questions, use sentences with words we were given, find adjectives from the article and do a quick true or false challenge.

Did I understand?

  1. Who did Charley bang into?

Charley banged into Michaela's desk while walking to her desk.

  1. 'Charley's at... More relaxed.' What is the main message/purpose of this paragraph? How does the author create this mood? What does it teach us about Charley?

This paragraph is teaching us about Charley and how she feels about herself. She’s feeling that she is weird and that she’s different from the other children.

  1. What impression does the author want to give of Charley? How do you know?

The author gave us the impression that Charley feels weird and wants us to feel sympathetic for her.

Why is Charley angry with Amy? Do you think that she is right to be angry? Why/why not?

Charley is mad at Amy for standing up for her, and thinks she’s ruined her chance of having an in-joke with Michaela about bumping into her. I believe that Charley is wrong for being so mad at Amy all because she was trying to stand up for her.

  1. Find a range of words and phrases to show how Charley is feeling throughout the story.

Insecure

Feeling like she's an outsider

Strange

Unconfident in herself/thoughts

Exploring language

What do these words mean? find a definition for each one and use it in a sentence.

  1. Screeches

A screech is a loud piercing noise.

The owl outside my house screeches at night.

  1. Apologise

To say sorry

I wish the owl would apologise for keeping me up at night.

  1. Intently

Give a lot of attention to something.

I would look out my window and intently stare at the owl.

Write 3 sentences about the story using They're, there and their.

They’re making fun of Charley in the classroom.

  1. There

Charley sat there and struggled to draw a line.

  1. Their

Hockey

What is hockey?

Hockey is a team sport, this sport is played between a group of two teams as long as

both teams have the same amount of players. The aim of the game is to use hockey

sticks ( Which have a hooked bottom with one flat side and one curved side ) and

using the sticks the team has to drive a small hockey ball towards and into the goal

of the opposing team.

In each team there should be a defence which stays in their team’s half of the field.

Attackers are allowed to be anywhere beside their own team’s goalie circle. Last but

not least, the goalie stays in the goalie circle to defend their goal.

Unless you are playing in a real hockey team and only playing for a school sport you

most likely only need a hockey stick, Shin pads and mouth guard. Shin pads and

mouth guard are for safety purposes as you can get hit in the shin with a stick or a

ball easily. But when it comes to a mouth guard, Either you buy a mouth guard or else

you might have to buy a new set of teeth.

Never use your hockey stick like you’re playing golf, just don’t be stuid we are NOT

playing golf. Try your best not to hit the ball up in the air, this can sometimes

happen when you hit the ball with your stick a little under the ball. Never lift up

your hockey stick above the waist.

While learning how to play hockey I learnt how to juggle with my hockey ball on my

stick, it isn’t easy and also isn’t too safe but that day we had plastic hockey sticks

and tennis balls.

If you may have any questions on how to play please ask away in the comments and I

will try to get back to you.
