Hurumanu 1

 How To Be Normal

For Hurumanu 1 / Outstanders, we have been looking at our article for our level. I’m in group 3 the highest group working on an article called ‘How To Be Normal’

We had to answer questions, use sentences with words we were given, find adjectives from the article and do a quick true or false challenge.

Did I understand?

  1. Who did Charley bang into?

Charley banged into Michaela's desk while walking to her desk.

  1. 'Charley's at... More relaxed.' What is the main message/purpose of this paragraph? How does the author create this mood? What does it teach us about Charley?

This paragraph is teaching us about Charley and how she feels about herself. She’s feeling that she is weird and that she’s different from the other children.

  1. What impression does the author want to give of Charley? How do you know?

The author gave us the impression that Charley feels weird and wants us to feel sympathetic for her.

Why is Charley angry with Amy? Do you think that she is right to be angry? Why/why not?

Charley is mad at Amy for standing up for her, and thinks she’s ruined her chance of having an in-joke with Michaela about bumping into her. I believe that Charley is wrong for being so mad at Amy all because she was trying to stand up for her.

  1. Find a range of words and phrases to show how Charley is feeling throughout the story.

Insecure

Feeling like she's an outsider

Strange

Unconfident in herself/thoughts

Exploring language

What do these words mean? find a definition for each one and use it in a sentence.

  1. Screeches

A screech is a loud piercing noise.

The owl outside my house screeches at night.

  1. Apologise

To say sorry

I wish the owl would apologise for keeping me up at night.

  1. Intently

Give a lot of attention to something.

I would look out my window and intently stare at the owl.

Write 3 sentences about the story using They're, there and their.

They’re making fun of Charley in the classroom.

  1. There

Charley sat there and struggled to draw a line.

  1. Their
