Business and Enterprise

For business and enterprise my team did some painted rocks. My team members where Taylor, Jackson and me. Together we made around 60 - 70 rocks and had maybe 15 or 16 rocks left over.

It was very fun making the rocks, we had different designs and ideas for our rocks, we had Christmas ones, monsters, frogs, rainbows and anything in between. Along with that we had a normal just plain blue rock, we sold that for $1... BUSINESS!

We did our rocks at home because our paint at home is... Better... than the ones at school. Me and Taylor both did our rocks with help from our mum's.

It was a little challenging to think of new ideas for our rocks that wouldn't be too hard to do. Just so we can get as many rocks do as possible. 

Talking about the market day, I think it went well. But that's just me, I'm not sure how my other teammates felt about the thing... Like I said before, we sold a lot. Not sure how much money we made though...

A highlight for me was probably getting to walk around and look at all the different shops. And also spend all my money...

What is a base?

 Acid has Hydrogen in it.

The strength if acid is measure on the pH scale.

Red Cabbage Indicator

 Aim:

I want to find out how to tell if something is an acid.

Method:

Equipment

• Beaker
• Red Cabbage
• Hot water
• Test tubes ( Test rube rack )
• Acid + hydroxide
• Dropper

Instructions

1. Get your equipment
2. Rip the red cabbage into little bits 
3. Place your ripped red cabbage bits in the beaker
4. Pour 100 ml hot water into the beaker
5. Slowly pour the acid into the one out of the bigger test tubes
6. In the other big test tube, pour hydroxide into it
7. Add the red cabbage water into the two big test tubes ( Use a dropper )
8. Mix ( with the dropper ) both the acid and hydroxide into little test tubes and try to make different colors.

Results

I made red, green, blue and purple by mixing the acid and hydroxide.

I also made a tube have orange, blue, green and purple.

Making Sherbet

 Aim: 

I want to find out how to make sherbet

Research:

Method:

Equipment:

• Cup - Some type of container
• Baking Powder
• Citric acid
• Sugar ( But we used raro )
• Stirring rod ( Popiscle stick )
• Teaspoon

Instuctions

1.  Get your equipment
2. Add a teaspoon of Raro into the cup
3. Add half a teaspoon of baking powder into the cup
4. Add half teaspoon of Citric acid
5. Mix the powder with the stirring rod
6. Taste the sherbet and adjust the flavor as necessary

Results:

The sherbet was sweet before it foamed up. After it's foamed it a little sour.

Disuccion:

Citric acid + Sodium Bicarbonate = Carbon dioxide

C₆H₈O₇ + NaHCO₃ = CO2

The Erebus Disaster

 What do I think I know about the disaster?

The Erebus is a plane disaster.

I believe it went of course and was also to low and hit something, I think it was a mountain.

I don't think anyone lived.

What do I think I will learn?

Because I think everyone died, how many where on the plane.

Where was the plane going.

What happened to cause this.

1. The plane was on a sightseeing trip around Antarctica, flying over several islands. Then they were to land in Christchurch. 

2. The captian was Jim Collins and Co-pilot first officer Greg Cassin.

3. The captain desend to 450 metres so his passengers could better see the surroundings.

4. The plane crashed into Mt Erebus, this was because they were 43 kilometres east of where thye were expected to be.

5. The plane crashed at 12:49 pm

 What do I think I know about this disaster?

I know it has to be an explosion in a mine, because of the title.

I think I heard it was some build up of a gas in the mine. I don't know how and why it exploded.

I presume a lot of miners died, I would say the explosion made some of the rocks fall and trap people.

What do I think I will find out about this disaster? 

I think I will find out how many people died.

What caused the explosion.

How people were affected.

1. It is located on the West Coast of the South island in the Paparoa Range.

2. The mining started in the Pike river mine in November 2009.

3. There were 31 miners in the mine when the explosion happened.

4. Only two men escaped, Daniel Rockhouse and Russell Smith.

5. There were robots sent into the mine to find any more survivors it was too dangerous for human rescuers.

6. Jacinda Ardern made decision unseal the entrance to send in a team to see what they could find.

What do I think I know about the disaster?

I would think  that the Tangiwai rail disaster derailed from the track, or the track was covered by lahar, because I heard lahar had a part in the disaster.

What do I think I will learn?

I would love to hear about what happened. How many people died and if there are any stories from people who lived though the disaster.

2. The lahar began at the top of Mt Ruapehu

3. The Tangiwai Railway disaster happened on December 24th 1953 at 10.21 pm

4. The driver knew to stop the train because a man was waving a torch.

Antarctica

 Welcome and thank you for stopping by! If you didn't know, this week I'm learning about Antarctica. I think Antarctica is a really cool place. Something I found was that some people think that Arctic and  Antarctica are the same, but they are polar opposites... Please laugh that was a joke 🥲 

Here we had to make a table of unfamiliar words we didn't really know the meaning of. Then after getting all 10 words we were unfamiliar with we had to find the definition of those words.

With some of my classmates we made a Jamboard, we had to add 2 - 3 different key things we found out about the Arctic ( I'm the top blue ones - the biggest 3 blue one )

Kiwis in space

 Making Ginger Beer

Aim:

To find out how to make ginger beer.

Method:

Equipment

Ginger

Cup

Water

Lemon juice

Sugar

Yeast

paper

Instructions

1. Get your equipment
2. Fold your paper into a funnel
3. Put a teaspoon of yeast onto the paper funnel
4. put 2 teaspoon of sugar
5. Pour Lukewarm water into your cup, 180 ml 
6. Stir slightly
7. put a few squirts of lemon juice
8. Stir is a bit more using wooden stick
9. Put the ginger onto the paper and pour half in
10. Taste it ( Add more ginger if you want )
11. Add a tablespoon of sugar
12. Taste it angain ( Add more of what you think it needs more of )
13. Leave it for a day before trying it

Results

It smelt very weird. I'm not sure how to describe it. It was a awful smell!

The taste was alright. Not the best ginger beer i've ever had but it was still very nice. It had a very strong ginger taste and a weird aftertaste.

It looked very yellowy-brown  with little bits of ginger. At the bottom a puddle of ginger was just sitting there.

The Ballantynes Fire

 Welcome to by blog! This week we have been learning about the Ballantynes fire. I found it really interesting and I hope you like it just as much as me!

Predictions

What do I think I already now about this disaster?

I know that this is a fire that happened on Nov 18th 1974.

What do I think I will learn about this disaster?

• What caused the fire?
• Did anyone die in the fire?
• What happened to the shop?
• How long did it take to put out?
• How expensive was the damage?

Read and Research

1.  People were served by waitresses in aprons and caps, expensive clothes were sold and ladies wore hat and gloves. It was a designer store.
2.  Christchurch
3.  November 18th, 1947 
4.  They had no smoke alarms or evacuations plans. People though it was just a small cellar fire so didn't tell the people upstairs.
5. 41 worker died in the fire. Two people from veranda and were unconscious but recovered.
6. No smoking, they now have smoke alarms, have an evacuation plan, DON'T WALK PAST A FIRE AND DO NOTHING!

 Snow

I love snow, when I was younger, I saw a LOT of snow. I would be so much fun if we had a lot of snow again. 

It was cold, and I was 3 or so, my mum and dad took me out to the park near mine. I was in a jacket, had mittens on and a woolly hat. I can't remember how the snow felt but, now that it has snowed a bit today, I can remember the feeling. It's light, very cold - my hands were frozen with snow, and weirdly crunchy and wet. 

Snow is created when tiny ice crystals stick tougher, they get heavy and fall to the ground. The more ice crystal that stick tougher the bigger the snow gets.

If I were to make a new Olympic sport, I would make a wacky weird sport So I stole the idea of laser tag and...improved it....

 The Napier Earthquake

Predictions

Sadly, I have never really heard about the Napier Earthquake. All I could think the Napier earthquake was about is... Well, an earthquake causing a lot of damage or something like that.

Although I do think that I'll enjoy learning about this. I think I might find out how much damage it cause, what the aftermath was, and if there is anything special about it. 

Hopefully I can even learn when it happened! Oh wait, it happened on the 3 of February in 1931... 

Now, after reading about the Napier Earthquake

1. At 10.47 on Feb 3rd, 1931

2. The official death toll was 256.161 in Napier, 93 in Hastings and 2 in Wairoa

3. In the botanical gardens and the racecourse in Napier

4. They were able to rebuild the houses in an art Deco style, making it a tourist  attraction.

5. 2 and a half minutes... WOW THAT'S LONG

6. Children were sent around NZ because there were no school for them to go to and no houses for them to live. Also to keep children safe from aftershocks.

Nola was 9 when the earthquake hit and in the video she it just 1 year away from 100!

Eric Baggit was 2 when the earthquake hit, he didn't remember anything be seen the ciry rebuilt.

3. Suck the hot sauce off the toothpick

5. stop timing when it stops hurting
